Fly
Fishing:
While rod selection is a personal choice, a good rule of thumb is a
graphite 9 weight rod. The 9 weight is ideal for most of the conditions that
will be encountered here in the Keys. The exceptions would be on calm days
when an 8 weight would be adequate, or if stalking giant tarpon, when a 12
weight is necessary. Choose a quality weight forward floating
line matched to the fly rod. Leaders should be 9 to 10 feet long with a
tippet of 10# to 12# for most applications. (Giant tarpon require 20#
tippet). Please feel free to call for specific information regarding
appropriate fly patterns. I provide Sage & G. Loomis fly rods,
ROSS Reels and Orvis fly line.
Successful Fly Patterns:

Spin
fishing:
A light to medium action 7 foot rod balanced for 8# to 12# test
monofilament is suggested. The reel should be of good quality with a
reliable, smooth drag and have a capacity of at least 150 yards of 10# test
line. 1/8 to 1/4 oz. jigs of varied colors are effective for fishing the
flats. Rods, reels, and bait will be provided.
