May 6
The Dlesk
brothers from Illinois sent these comments: "Just wanted
to let you know we had another great trip and a great time. Alex was
outstanding as usual. We hooked over 40 tarpon in 4 days. Only got 4
all the way to the boat but we had plenty of good battles. Those big
bruisers kept cutting us off on the bridge. Also picked up a 37” snook,
a 40 lb goliath grouper, and a nice mangrove snapper. The action on the
offshore trip on Seaboots was slow, but I did manage to catch one nice
dolphin (56”) See enclosed pictures."

May 5
IT'S TARPON TIME!
Come on down and put some silver kings in the air.
I still have a few open days in April, May and June. Call or email
for availability

April 20
Anthony Pellitteri and
father-in-law John
from Stony Point, New York found success today on the flats
of the Lower Keys. Winds were calm and it was a picture perfect
Florida Keys day. We spent some time searching for the big tarpon
but the recent cool front has them off there normal patterns. John
released a nice jack crevalle and Anthony had a black tip shark on the
line which jumped several times until it bit through the leader.
It became apparent that we needed to shift our game plan and slip up
onto the shallows and it payed off as both Anthony and John released a
bonefish.

April 6
Mariel & Loren James Wiley from Ramrod Key
caught and released this big mangrove snapper off the dock at
the back of there house while mom and dad were preparing dinner.
Mariel was using a live shrimp and her super duper Zebco outfit.
Loren released a small jack and a barracuda.
March 23
Chuck Dearth and Brian Rach
honorary members of the "Wisco Gang" were met with some
brisk and cool North East breezes. Although the opportunities were
few and far between Brian had a few big cudas smash the tube lure right
next to the boat only to throw the hooks on the jumps. Later the
sun came out and the winds backed off and the tarpon bite was on...if
only for a short while. Four tarpon were jumped off and one
released for Chuck.

March 21
The "Wisco Boys" Dave & Jason Smith
have rolled back into town to escape the late March snow storm that is
blanketing there town of Monroe, Wisconsin today.
Tough conditions with North East 20 knots and gusty but the guys
persevered and were rewarded with an awesome leaping display from an 80
pound silver king. The bones and permit were scarce but we did
release some cudas and sharks as well.

March 20
Bob Blomquist from New Jersey and
Paul Sawicki from Washington D.C. area traveled down to
the Lower Keys for a quick Fish Fix. Although the conditions were
difficult Bob pulled off a bonefish release and Paul released some cudas
and sharks.

March 3 & 4
Two of my most "highly trained" Outcast team
members Jeff Armstrong and Mary Senausky from Philly Pennsylvania had
some good luck and some bad luck. Water temperatures were about 74
degrees which is right at the minimum for tarpon. We poled and
poled for permit until we came across a huge perm I would estimate to be
in the 25 to 30 pound range. Jeff made a "real nice cast" and
hooked that brute of a fish. 15 minutes into the fight the perm
wrapped the line around a crab trap line and it popped off. Jeff
later had a shot at some tailing bones and hooked the tarpon you see
below. Not to be out done Mary caught a few sharks and a good time
was had by all.

February 25
With flat calm seas and a beautiful sunny Florida
Keys day John Cammerano from New Jersey scored a mixed bag and a bone to
boot!

February 3, 2008
Scott Miller and Dani Fore escaped
a wintry and snowy blast which covered Chicago O'hare Airport
with a blanket of snow. They were greeted with sunny 80 degree
weather and a fun afternoon on the water in the Lower Keys. Both
caught and released these bonnet head sharks!

January 30, 2008
Awesome sunny day with light winds and 78 degrees
greeted Sam and John Leake from Dallas, Texas. The water
temperatures started out a cool 68 degrees in the morning but warmed
through the day producing some permit opportunities. The permit
were skittish and quick but John broke the ice with an 18 pound
barracuda. We also encountered a variety of other marine life on
today's trip which kept things interesting. We are fishing again
on Friday.

October 10-11
The "Wisco Boys" Dave Smith and Joel Belter from
the Monroe, Wisconsin area arrived for their annual fall jaunt to the
Lower Keys. They were greeted with a front which frothed up the
seas and created winds of 25 to 30 knots. But with some patience
and a bit of luck the winds decreased on the last two days giving us
opportunity to get out onto the hunt. Perseverance paid off as
both caught bonefish and two nice permit. Dave's permit weighed in
at 23 pounds and was caught using a light G. Loomis spin rod with 20
pound "Power Pro" braided line. He presented a live crab to the
cruising permit and the ensuing battle went on for about 15 minutes.
September 26-27-28
Flats angling aficionado Neal Laws Jr. from
Fairfield, Illinois encountered some decent weather and had a
bit of success with bonefish and redfish. Neal and I came across a
few schools of very small bones 7 to 9 inches in length. In fact
Neal released a small one as seen in the picture below.
In speaking with local biologist Dr. Philip Kramer, he indicated that
both the Bahamas and Keys bones are the same species Abula Vulpes.
He indicated a smaller sub species exists called Abula Garcia which
spends most of it's time in deeper waters.
Dr. Phil...Is this bone below Abula Garcia or Abula Vulpes?
September 20
I had the pleasure this day of fishing with
fellow University of Delaware alumnus Nathan Laubach from Scott
Run, Pennsylvania. Although the winds whipped up and our
hopes of finding permit and bones along the gulf edges of Key West were
dashed Nathan saved the day by hooking a HUGE barracuda
that was laid up along a channel edge.

September 5-6-7
Fast & Furious is how I would describe our
experience today on the Lower Keys flats for Dallas, Texas anglers
Joe Speiwak & Jerry Hamilton. Early in the morning on the
high tide we found some huge bonefish schooling up tight behind some
mangroves. Jerry made a great cast and hooked a ten
pounder! A bit later we found a spot where the lemon sharks were
plentiful so Joe made alot of casts with the fly and they would follow
but not close the deal. Next we came into a frenzy of
REDFISH...the guys hooked about 10 reds, releasing 7. What a
thrill! Joe hooked a 7# bonefish later in the day and also
released a 10 pound bone on day 1.
August
Hot and balmy weather brings some decent fishing
for Robert and Armando Merlo from New Jersey and New York City.
Armando hooked two bonefish first day out and on day two
released a permit. Robert "the shark" Merlo lived up to his name
when he broke the ice with some lemon shark releases.

June
Veteran flats anglers Bob Blomquist and
cohort Vince from Oaklyn, New Jersey experienced some awesome
Lower Keys Tarpon fishing in late June. The guys hooked over 12
tarpon on our first night and then hooked four more the following night.
Vince snared a nice mangrove snapper for the dinner
table and Bob capped off our day time foray with a 20#
permit on an oceanside flat.

May 14-15-16
Today veteran Outcast member Neal Laws Jr.
from Fairfield, Illinois stuck two bonefish on fly! The
winds are switching to the East and we saw lots of bonefish in the Lower
Keys. MORE TO COME...

May 10-11-12
Unusual West to North West winds greeted fly
anglers Gray Thornton and Kelli Sellers from Dallas, Texas.
The Tarpon run along the oceanside was off as the usual strings of
fish did not materialize. Gray and Kelli
placed their flies in front of a number of cruising tarpon but they were
not interested in slurping it in. Kelli dominated
our night time forays (which was also way off) with 6 tarpon "on the
fly". Both hooked juvenile tarpon during the day.

April
Tarpon are beginning to show on the flats and
have been stacked up at Bahia Honda Bridge. Our evening and night
tarpon trips have yielded the best results for those anglers willing to
give it a go.
April 5
5 year old Loren James Wiley of Ramrod Key
released a big bonnet shark during a sunset father and son trip. "LJ"
has developed an uncanny casting ability. He hit the strike zone
and the shark proceeded to smoke the line off of his little Zebco.
March 27-28
Have I mentioned the Windy conditions?
Fen Sartorius from New Mexico and
angling companion Harry Davis from Chatsworth, Georgia
persevered through more windy and difficult conditions to land some
cudas, a shark and Harry's permit caught while wading the
Lower Keys flats.

March 15
Cheryl and Fritz Vornhold from Hummelville,
Pennsylvania found some hungry redfish in the Lower Keys.
They released about 5 reds! Fritz hooked a permit
which stripped the spool and broke off during a long blistering run.
Cheryl capped off our great day with an 80 pound tarpon to
the boat.

March 12-13-14
Windy, Windy, Windy...Jeff Armstrong
and Mary Senausky from Chalfont, Pennsylvania mad the best of
some tough conditions out of Key West with winds ENE at 20 to 30 mph.
We were expecting a good showing of permit to top Jeff's
five permit releases last year (see March 23-24-25 below)

February 23
17 year Outcast veteran John Camerano from
Whiting, New Jersey released a few nice cudas, and a bonnet
shark. The waters of the Lower Keys ranged from 67 degrees in the
morning to 72 degrees in the afternoon. Still too cool for the
tarpon, but we did get a quick shot at two schools of bonefish. I
ran over a school of permit with the boat late in the day so that wiped
out our only permit opportunity. Always a great day on the water
with "The Congressman" from New Jersey!

January 22 & 23, 2007
Archie Purcell ventured down from
Chapel Hill,
North Carolina for a winter time fly fishing foray upon the flats of the
Lower Keys. We encountered some windy conditions on the first day
and it was a challenge to get close to the permit that we found.
Archie released two bones on fly late in the day as the water temps
reached 79 degrees. The second day we found some finicky redfish
and spooky permit. Our bonefish did not show this day, however
Archie made some casts to laid up baby tarpon at the "going home spot".

January 5, 2007
A blustery day brought in the New Year for our
first trip in '07 with father and son team Les and Leslie Baron of
Santa Ana, California. A few barracudas smashed our
quickly retrieved tube lures and then we found some "muds" which
produced about a dozen small seatrout, sharks, and jacks. The
water was warm, about 76 degrees but the bones and baby tarpon were a no
show.

October 18, 2006
Calm and balmy conditions yielded some
opportunities for bones on the Lower Keys flats for Todd Hinrichs
and brother-in-law from Tampa, Florida.

October 12
Brothers Dave & Bob Hankin from Tampa,
Florida had 3 bonefish hooked up releasing two. Dave
capped off the awesome day with a big permit which measured 36 inches in
length. An approaching front produced light west winds and
conditions were good for sight casting. We found some tailing
bones first thing in the morning in the Lower Keys.

September 29-30 October 1
AWESOME FALL FISHING! in the Lower Keys with
Bob Blomquist party; Paul, Vincent and Vince, from Oaklyn, NJ
area. Bob hooked and lost a permit and a few tarpon which would
have clinched his SLAM #2 this year! (See June 21 & 24)

September 6 - 7 - 8
Long time Team Outcast member Joe Spiewak
and angling companion Jerry Hamilton from Texas,
saw a "Goodly" amount of permit, bones and baby tarpon in the Lower Keys
this past week. We released a total of 8 bonefish, several
baby tarpon and some sharks.

August 15 - 16 - 17 - 18
Fishing the Lower Keys flats with father & son
team Armando & Robert "The Shark" Merlo of North Bergen, New
Jersey. Armando started out our first day with a juvenile
tarpon release. Later the boys released a several bonnet sharks
and Armando had a HUGE barracuda slam his lure next
to the boat! Robert ruled on day two with four big
lemon sharks between 75 and 100 pounds. Armando attempted to nail
some of the tarpon on fly but they were difficult to approach.

DAY 3: Armando scored a
bonefish release as well as cudas. Robert "the shark"
reaked havoc with the bruiser lemon sharks again today. Another
awesome day!!!!!

DAY 4: Started out slow today with few
shots at permit and bonefish. Finished off with a BANG as
Armando hooked and released a 60 pound lemon shark ON FLY!!

July 11 & 12
Skilled angler Neal Laws Jr. from
Fairfield, Illinois used a quick presentation with a crab on the
Lower Keys flats to catch & release this HUGE permit!
Probably one of our biggest permit we've caught together over the years!
Neal hooked and jumped some baby tarpon on fly, but we brought none to
the boat. On the second day we had to keep on the move to avoid
being struck by lightning, and eventually came in early due to weather.
Congrats on the big perm Neal!!
June 21 & 24
GRAND SLAM for long time "Team
Outcast" member Bob Blomquist from Oaklyn, New Jersey and
his fishing companions! Brian Boston of Haverton,
Pennsylvania scored some tarpon hook ups during the midnite
tarpon session and Bob released an 80 pounder.
Fishing with Bob on day two 15 year old Michael Betch from Mt.
Laurel, New Jersey released a bonefish and a baby tarpon.
Bob clinched the SLAM with his permit.
Way to go guys!!

May 18-19-20
A stormy front passed through just prior to my
first day with Kemper Shaw from California and Ben Shaw from
Sydney, Australia. Tarpon was our goal but the north west
winds shut down the day time bite. We had some good shots at
tailing bonefish on the Lower Keys flats. We hooked and jumped over 15
tarpon on the evening tarpon slam sessions. Ben
released a 100 pound tarpon and several six foot lemon sharks.
Kemper also released several lemon sharks, a jack crevalle
and jumped many tarpon.

May 14-15
Flats fishing veteran and 14+ year "Team Outcast"
client and friend Neal Laws from Fairfield, Illinois
released 4 bonefish and jumped an 85 pound tarpon which threw the hook
on the second jump. One of the
biggest bones was chopped cleanly in half by a shark after it made a
blistering 100 yard dash. We never saw the shark coming or we would
have taken preventative counter measures.

May 8-9-10
Fishing day and evening sessions with Ryan Frost
and Terry Collins yielded some great action. Each released a bone
and some big lemon sharks. During the night time slam sessions we
jumped many tarpon, releasing 3 tarpon and a 16 pound snook!

May 5-6-7
Fishing these days with long time "Outcast Team"
members Barry Wiegmann of New Jersey and Bob Kovaks
of New York. Day one we shot out to the Marquesas hoping
to get into some fresh tarpon migrating into the Keys.
Our evening tarpon session provided some entertainment as Barry
hooked two tarpon on fly releasing one boat side as a huge bull shark
made attempts to devour our fish. On the first tarpon hook up, the fly line
wrapped the tip and pulled the fly rod apart. Being a "team player"
Bob grabbed for the parted fly line and rod tip in the
water with his bare hand...he was now attached to a wild tarpon on a
hand line! Needless to say we lost this tarpon, the fly rod, and the
fly line...but fortunately Bob still has all his fingers.
Bob hooked a permit and lost it, and released a bonefish today.
April 23
Loren James Wiley of Ramrod Key
went out fishing with his mom and dad for a few hours today. The
bonefish were a "no show" but his guide saved the day by putting Loren
onto some grunts found out in Hawks Channel.

April 20-22
Paul Zarella and angling companion
Art from Byfield, Massachusetts hit onto some outstanding
weather with light, warm breezes. The tarpon push has started this
week with huge schools pouring into the Lower Keys. Art
released a nice permit and the guys jumped many tarpon during the day &
night sessions. We had a number of tarpon releases at boatside and
one to a pack of bull sharks! During our last day Paul
hooked into a HUGE tarpon we estimate to be in the 200 pound range.
Paul battled the monster to the boat several times on
light spinning gear before it finally wore through the terminal tackle.

April 8-13
Great weather for our first few days with
Michael McBurnie and friend Steve from Tampa, Florida and Cary, North
Carolina. Yesterday Steve released a permit
and today Michael released a tarpon on fly. A front
pushed through this afternoon and sent us home early. DAY 3:
Northeast winds gusting to 30 knots!! We found a protected spot up in
the mangroves off of Big Pine Key and released some shark and a
bonefish.

April 4-5-6
Veteran fly anglers Adrian Rodriguez and
Doug McKnight from Dallas, Texas representing the Blue
Drake Fly Shop
www.bluedrake.com experienced multiple hook ups with tarpon on fly.
All in all the guys hooked and/or jumped over 16 tarpon during
our day and evening sessions.

March 30
I spent the week in the Smoky Mountains fishing
with awesome guide Kent Klewein from Blue Ridge, Georgia.
Kent took me to some beautiful streams where we waded for rainbows &
browns. For cabin rental and Kent's phone number:
www.creekfrontcabin.net

March 23-24-25
Ten year "Team Outcast" members Jeff
Armstrong & Mary Senausky from Chalfont, Pennsylvania scored big
again this year with awesome permit fishing and some late afternoon
tarpon escapades. Jeff released 5 permit and jumped 3
tarpon on fly. Mary released 2 tarpon on spin.

March 20
Today was a windy day...but a successful trip for
first time flats angler Wayne Andrei from Gross Point Park,
Michigan. We had quite a variety today with sharks, a
bonefish, jack crevalle, and a cobia.

March 17
Flat calm seas greeted Fritz & Cheryl
Vornhold from Hulmelville, Pennsylvania. Fritz
scored two 20# permit on a Lower Keys ocean side flat.
Cheryl shined in the afternoon with a jack crevalle, and a
bonnet shark. Tarpon were rolling around the boat and Cheryl had
one grab her pinfish but no hook up.

March 13 & 14
Fishing the flats of Key West with father and son
team Will and Connor Ryan from Dallas Texas netted a big
bone "on fly" for Will with lots of shots at tailing permit. Our
objective was tarpon on fly but the tarpon were a no show. The
permit were plentiful and we had a number of them follow the fly but no
takers.

March 10-11-12
Brothers Bob & John Blomquist from New
Jersey and Philly area scored a pair of "fatty" bonefish on a
Lower Keys flat, weighing in at 10 pounds each. A few big
barracuda gave us some blistering runs and jumps and even though the
wind was up our night time tarpon foray netted some tarpon releases.

February 20
Fishing with long time friend and client
John Camerano from New Jersey was a windy and slow fishing day
for sport fish. But John managed to bend the rod with some jacks,
mackeral and cudas.

February 2 & 3
Dan & Steve Tankersley from Winimac,
Indiana and Niles, Michigan pulled off two days of fishing just
before a cold front swept through the Keys over the weekend. Steve
had made a handfull of cuda lures (see picture) to cast in front of our
winter barracudas. A big cuda slammed the pink and red one on the
very first cast! The brothers also had some fun with sharks and
ladyfish. With the cooler water temperatures and quirky wind
directions bones, tarpon and permit were a no show.

October 14
Flat calm seas for Nate Weismman of
Bradenton, Florida and brother-in-law Danny
also of Bradenton. We set out at first light in the
Lower Keys and found some tailing bones but they were very spooky.
Later we released half a dozen bonnet sharks and had shots at bones and
some permit. Danny hooked into a nice bone which
proceeded to head straight up into the mangroves. Lost it.
Nate hooked and lost another bone, then Danny
closed the deal on a 6# bonefish which he released boatside.
Nate also released some 80# lemon sharks on 10# test power
pro

October 13
DAY 2: Another great day with the "Wisco Gang".
Joel Belter of Brown Deer, Wisconson
released a variety of sharks and a bonefish while Dave Smith
of Monroe, Wisconsin also released a bone a some large
lemon sharks.

October 3 & 4
Windy~~ This was the word for our first
day while fishing with veteran angler Neal Laws Jr. out of
Fairfield, Illinois. We did not see alot of fish,
however, Neal released three bones ranging in size from 5
to 9 pounds. Day two the winds were lighter but shifting to the
North East. Not many fish moving about, but Neal closed the deal
on a 10 pound bone that nearly spooled the reel on it's first run!
Later in the day we had some baby tarpon eat the fly but did not get the
jump.

September 28
3 year old Loren James Wiley out of
Ramrod Key, Florida ventured out on his first flats
fishing trip today with his Dad. We had numerous bonnet sharks and some big
bones approach while staked out on a Lower Keys oceanside flat.
Loren made several surprisingly accurate casts and hooked
three big sharks Had he hooked one of those big bones, I'm afraid
his little Zebco pushbutton reel would have exploded!

September 12 & 13
Jim Smithson from Illinois brought
his nephew Erik Smithson out with us the first day.
Erik hooked a baby tarpon at sunrise but it quickly spit
the hook. We hooked a few sharks while poling the Lower Keys flats
for bonefish. The bones were coming along fairly consistently but
Jim and Erik could not connect. As the
water was just about gone off the flat I spotted three large bonefish
coming our way. Erik nailed the cast and a big 10
pound bone then proceeded to peel off 150 yards of line. DAY
TWO: Jim was solo in the morning and we hopscotched to
many baby tarpon spots but never saw the first tarpon roll. On to
an oceanside bone flat and again nothing. We stopped at
www.parmersresort.com to pick
up Kathy Smithson for the afternoon bonefish hunt.
Kathy changed our luck and Jim ended up
releasing three nice bonefish on a beautiful white sand flat out on the
gulf side.

DAY 1 Started out with a bang
during the "midnite tarpon express" jumping four big tarpon hours after
they arrived. First thing next morning Paul jumped
and released a tarpon over 100 pounds. Next we moved to the
oceanside where we encountered many schools of cruising tarpon in 4 feet
of water, although none were interested in our presentations. In
the afternoon the guys released copious quantities of sharks,
barracudas, had shots at more tarpon and a few permit in the
backcountry. Both Bob and Paul ended
the day by each releasing a bonefish!
May 27- 31
PALOLO WORM HATCH!! Brennan Eberle
from Cary, North Carolina and Jim Wiley from
Purcellville, Virginia were witness to the elusive palolo
worm hatch tarpon feeding frenzy this past weekend. It was flat
calm and we could see thousands of tarpon slurping up worms. The
"Tarpon Rodeo" ended up with a bang when Brennan released a 60# and 100#
tarpon back to back on the last evening. The grandfather/grandson
team jumped a dozen tarpon each and also released some boat side.

May 23 & 24
Brisk north west winds met long time friend and
client Neal Laws Jr. from Fairfield, Illinois.
We fished in the backcountry of the Lower Keys on the first day hoping
to find some permit and bones. The permit eluded us this day,
however Neal released two bonefish of unusual
proportion...no they were not 15 pounders, but instead they were very
small. One measured 12" tip of the nose to tip of the tail and the
other 13". On average our bones are about 7 to 9 pounds and I
rarely if ever have encountered juvenile bonefish like this, not even in
the Bahamas. Pictures to come...
DAY TWO: With continued NW winds we changed up our game plan and
fished the oceanside flats scoring a 10 pound bonefish release. We
had a shot at a cruising permit while we ate lunch. Then during the
afternoon we encountered a good run of migrating tarpon. One
school which slowly meandered by our position contained over 50 tarpon!
See the photo below...the dark spot is a huge ball of tarpon.
April 20-21-22-23
IT'S TARPON TIME! Fishing the "split day"
schedule worked out well for brothers John & Jeff
Bodenmann from Marshfield, Massachusetts and Pelham, New York
respectively. We experienced a good bite during the "Midnight
Tarpon Express" runs with multiple hookups both on fly and spin.
We hooked and jumped over a dozen fish each night and released several
boat side. Our day time hunts were fruitful also with light winds
and good visibility being the norm. We had many opportunities throughout
each day. Several of the cruising schools of ocean side tarpon
which passed by the skiff contained over 50 fish! On day 3 & 4
both John and Jeff had tarpon eat there fly. John
released a tarpon over 100 pounds and Jeff had 3 hook ups
on day 4. One of his tarpon made about three jumps before it
ejected the fly. Thank you Bodenmanns & Capt. Jake Jordan
of Marathon, Florida for including me again this year in
your annual "Gravina Tarpon Extravaganza"!
March 24-25-26
The fishing out of Key West
with Jeff Armstrong & Mary Senausky from Chalfont,
Pennsylvania has been outstanding. A steady stream of
cruising and tailing permit kept our adrenalin flowing. Tarpon
have also provided some great action. Throw in an occasional
bonefish and you have the makings of a "grand slam!" Day
1 and
2 pictures below:

Day 3: another memorable one:
Jeff made a "nice cast" to a tailing permit, once hooked it
proceeded to make a lightning bolt dash off the flat peeling every bit
of line off the spool...permit number one gone! Permit number two
was not so lucky. This one was a monster. Later in the day
Mary hooked into a 90# tarpon and released it boat side.
Just after sunset Jeff jumped a big tarpon off right next
to the boat after 3 spectacular jumps at close range.
March 23
RED HOT! Light winds and 80 degree water
temperatures sparked some action today for Dave & Lance Smith of
Monroe, Wisconsin. The father and son team honed their
casting skills early in the day with several bonnet sharks, then the duo
each moved on to score their first bonefish release! From here it
got better as we moved into a Lower Keys channel where the tarpon were
rolling and busting the surface. Lance was the jack
crevalle king while Dave, not to be outdone hooked a 70#
tarpon and released it boat side after a fantastic acrobatic display.
Lance added to the species list by hooking a feisty cobia
late in the day which was released. All in all it was an awesome
day. Congratulations guys!

Release.
